Pineapple Plants

So how many of my blog posts start with... "I saw on pinterest..." ?? Well here's another.

I saw on pinterest that you can grow a pineapple plant from the top of a pineapple and in 12-18 months it will produce another pineapple, not to mention you get a pretty cool plant to enjoy in the mean time. I meantioned that to Tanler when he purchase two 99 cent pineapples yesterday and he was totally on board with giving it a try. Actually he was as excited about it as I was and we went back to Fry's to get 5 more... thats right 7 pineapple plants ; )

We watched a video that instructed us to twist the tops of the pineapple off and then pluck the leaves back about an inch. Some of the tops revealed roots already there:

All the plants ready to be planted
You place the plant firmly (but not too tight) into the soil and water around the base of the plant.

Total cost of the project was $25 ($7 for the pineapple, $8 for the 2 pots we had to buy - had the rest, $10 for the potting soil) and a fun afternoon together, plus Tanler will have a TON of frozen pineapples for smoothies! We are both super to see if they will grow. I guess it takes several weeks of the plant looking like it is dying before it starts to produce new and healthy leaves... so in about 2 months we might have some nice looking house plants!
